Known as Mississippi's Family City, Clinton is located in Hinds County, only seven miles from Jackson. History of Clinton
Founded in 1823 as Mount Salus (Mountain of Health), the area became known as Clinton in 1828. Mississippi College was built in 1826 on Clinton real estate. It is the oldest college in Mississippi and was the first to grant a woman a degree. Mount Hermon Female Seminary, a college for black women, was built in 1875 and closed its doors in 1924.
During the Civil War, troupes from both sides briefly took over Clinton real estate in 1863. A riot broke out in 1875 over reconstruction, killing several Republicans and African-American people. The government's lack of response to the riot brought about an end to reconstruction efforts.
Camp Clinton, for German POWs, came about during WWII. The US Army Corps of Engineers used the prisoners to construct a flood control channel, using the Mississippi River Basin as a guide.
Education System in Clinton
The Clinton Public School District oversees the educational needs of Clinton students. There are four elementary schools, two junior high schools, one high school, one vocational complex and one alternative school providing public education to residents of Clinton real estate. Two private schools provide parents with an alternative to public schools.

The Baptist Healthplex, Cascades Racquet Club and Clinton YMCA provide recreational activities to its visitors, including swimming, baseball, racquetball, tennis courts, basketball and other activities to keep fit.
