History of Florence
In the early 1820s, the Steen family settled close to what is currently known as Florence real estate.  They, in turn, named the area Steen's Creek.  The first postmaster and storekeeper, John B. Lewis, was the next person to settle in the small town.  He set up the first racetrack and saloon, creating an inviting atmosphere for men to gather round, drink, bet the horses and fight.

In 1824, the first baptist church congregated in a small log house on Silas Steen's property.  This church remains in existence to this day as the First Baptist Church of Florence.  A Methodist church was built in 1878 and continued to serve its flock until the current building was constructed in 1900 as the Marvin Methodist Church.

By 1900, the cotton industry was booming in Steen's Creek.  It was at that time that the area caught the attention of the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad, who were trying to build a railline from Jackson to Gulfport.  W. Ellis, Sr. donated land for the railroad's depot in Steen's Creek if the railroad agreed to name it after Florence Steen, his wife.  That's when Steen's Creek was changed to the city of Florence.

Florence Schools
Rankin County School District oversees the public education of students living in Florence real estate.  There are three elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and one "attendance center" (for grades 7-12).  For an alternative to public education, Jackson SDA Elementary School is a private school for students in first through eighth grades.

Fun in Florence
There are many parks, sports complexes and community centers occupying Florence real estate to choose from.  The Florence Community Center is available for rent for the public and any corporate or government entities for any number of events.

Both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are very active for residents of Florence real estate.  They help improve the quality of life in Florence.  Whether you are an adult or a child, the Scouts are a great place to meet other people and become more civically minded individuals.

There are also many civic clubs that operate in Florence.  These clubs are a part of the General Federated Women's Clubs and Mississippi Federated Women's Clubs that volunteer services in their community, state and country.  Their purpose is to bring women of the state together for service to their community and their state.    

It's easy to see why residents of Florence real estate can look forward to the future while remembering their past.
